Solar electricity panels, also known as photovoltaics (PV), capture the sun’s energy and convert it into electricity that you can use in your home.
By installing solar panels, you can generate your own renewable electricity. Once you’ve paid for the initial installation, your electricity costs will be reduced as well as your carbon footprint.
Benefits of Solar PV
Cheaper electricity bills – On average, a solar PV system can save between €200-€300 per year on your domestic electricity bill. This will make a big difference to you household running costs, allowing you to save for what really matters.
Improve your BER – By investing in solar PV, you will also be making an impact on the BER of your home. When it comes to selling your home, a higher BER will add value and help you achieve a higher sale price.
Reduce your emissions – Generating your own renewable electricity also has benefits for our environment. The energy you consume will be clean energy which cuts down on your greenhouse gas emissions.
And with a Battery energy storage systems any excess electricity generated during daytime hours can be used at another time.
Value of Solar PV grant available from SEAI
SEAI offer homeowners a grant to support the installation of Solar PV panels and battery energy storage systems. This will help reduce the electricity you currently purchase from your supplier and save you money.
- The SEAI offers €900 for every kWp* up to a maximum of 2kWp. Any installation over 2kWp must install a battery. A grant of €600 is available for a battery storage system.
For example, you would receive €1800 for 2kWp solar panels (ie 6/7 solar panels)
- You’ll get €300 for every additional kWp up to 4kWp if you get a battery.
For example, for 3kWp you will receive €2,100 for 3kWp solar panels plus €600 for the battery system.
* What is a KWp? kWp is the peak power of a PV system or panel. Solar electricity systems are given a rating in kilowatts peak (kWp). This is essentially the rate at which it generates energy at peak performance for example at noon on a sunny day.
Who can apply for an SEAI Solar PV grant?
Support is available to all owners of dwellings built and occupied before 2011 and where SEAI have not previously provided support for solar PV system at that address.
The homes energy performance following installation of solar panels must be BER C or better.
